Livingroofs.org evolves into larger green roof alliance 21.12.07

Over the past few years the green roofing industry in Great Britain has expanded rapidly, with huge interest in the benefits of green roofs from Government, clients, specifiers and suppliers alike.  Throughout this period Livingroofs.org, an independent UK website and research centre set up to promote green roofs, has been the main focal point for the dissemination of information and advice.

At the forefront of green roofs promotion, Livingroofs.org is aware of major changes in legislation and planning requirements that will make 2008 a significant year for the green roof industry.  It is for this reason that Livingroofs.org is evolving from an independent organisation into a formal green roof alliance, to be know as The National Livingroofs Association. To facilitate the next steps, Livingroofs.org is forming a partnership with The Green Roof Centre in Sheffield, where the country’s other leading green roof expert Dr Nigel Dunnett is based. By joining forces, these organisations will create a single powerhouse of green roof knowledge and advice.

Speaking of this exciting development Livingroofs.org founder Dusty Gedge said “For the past 8 months I have been working with a number of colleagues in the industry to take Livingroofs.org to the next stage.  Key to this is the continuation of Livingroofs.org as a non-trade Association. The launch of the National Livingroofs Association will take place in 2008, with membership open to Government, universities, industry professionals, suppliers, specialist contractors, trade bodies and not for profit organisations. We hope all these stakeholders and more will affiliate themselves with the new Livingroofs.org green roof alliance.”

The primary aim of the National Livingroofs Association is to promote the benefits of green roofs to the widest possible audience, disseminate best practice information and provide advice on how to plan, specify and execute good quality green roofs.  Gedge added “we will also be working with the relevant parties and roofing trade associations to create a UK green roof Code of Practice that can be adopted by the whole industry.  This will focus on the actual green roof elements as opposed to the waterproofing for which standards already exist.”

A meeting to bring together key players will be called early in the New Year, when further details on membership categories and services will be made available.

Organised by Groundwork Sheffield on behalf of the Green Roof Centre and the University of Sheffield, the event focused on how to design and build small-scale and DIY green roofs.

Leading UK expert Dr. Nigel Dunnett gave a presentation on planting and design options; Dusty Gedge, founder of livingroofs.org spoke about supporting biodiversity and the environmental benefits of green roofs, and John Little from the Grass Roof Company explored practical construction ideas. The Green Roof Centre supports innovation across South Yorkshire
28 th June 2007

The Green Roof Centre has awarded a total of £45,000 to three unique green roof developments in South Yorkshire.

The Innovation Awards, funded by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund , were launched to support the expanding use of green roof technology in South Yorkshire. The Green Roof Centre; a partnership between Groundwork Sheffield and the University of Sheffield, made the awards to:- Dale Eco Community Centre, Barnsley and Manor Lodge Visitor Centre and St. Vincent’s Park, both in Sheffield. Jeff Sorrill, Project Manager for The Green Roof Centre, said “We are very proud to support these three developments. They represent a spectrum of projects from small-scale to a multi-million pound scheme. However, they all share a strong environmental vision combined with a commitment to implementing best practise in green roof technology. We believe they will inspire and encourage others to consider the benefits to be gained from the use of green roofs”

St Vincent’s Park , awarded £14,000, will be Sheffield’s first public park /open space located on top of a multi- storey car park with a green façade. The structure will also incorporate office space, residential units, public lift and a new stepped pedestrian route. This inspiring, City Council led, development is identified in the St Vincent’s Action Plan and by utilising S106 funds aims to create a high quality park for the local community in a location greatly lacking in green space. The roof will combine a mixture of substrate depths to accommodate a variety of flora ranging from wildflowers to trees, hedges to climbers. Bespoke art works, a pergola and a café /restaurant with performance space are other aspects of the vision for this distinctive site.

Barnsley ’s Worsbrough Dale Park, awarded £13,000, is to be home to a new community centre created out of old shipping containers. In order to fit in with the park landscape a green roof has been included as an integral part of the design. Friends of Dale Park who are leading on the project are committed to demonstrating sustainable building techniques to the local community and what better place for this than in the local park which lies at the heart of the village. Other sustainable features, dependant on funding, will include solar water heating panels and rainwater harvesting.

Sheffield ’s award winning Green Estate company has secured funds to build a new visitors centre at Manor Lodge. The purpose built centre will be a showcase for sustainable design and the inclusion of a meadow flowers green roof is part of an overall vision for achieving a zero carbon footprint. The site’s historical importance will attract a national audience, however its day to day focus will be to increase access to the local community. The visitors centre, awarded £16,000, aims to demonstrate ‘green’ technologies in such a way that people will feel inspired to incorporate them into their own homes.

The Green Roof Centre Demonstration Site

The University of Sheffield campus will soon be the home of the Green Roof Centre’s Demonstration Site. Funded by Objective 1 - ERDF and in partnership with Groundwork Sheffield and co-sponsored by Alumasc Exteriors, the 500m2 site can boast the widest range of green roof types in the UK.

The landscape design has been undertaken by Thom White of White Horse Green People, with planting specification by Dr Nigel Dunnett of the University of Sheffield. The site will demonstrate example of traditional green roof solutions and also innovative methods of taking advantage of often under utilised roof spaces.

On completion, later this year, the site will be offered as one of our tour locations.

Rooftop Green Scheme Scoops Air
Quality Awards
April 2007

While the on-going regeneration of Sheffield’s landscape continues, an organisation helping to transform building design around the city is the latest recipient of a Care4Air Award.

Sheffield’s Green Roof Forum is helping to change Sheffield’s rooftops into viable habitats for plants and wildlife, as well as offering businesses and residents more environmentally friendly premises.

Green roofs have many advantages over ‘standard roofs’, including helping to keep buildings cool in summer, filtering dust and air pollution, reducing rainwater run-off and providing wildlife habitats. They can also extend the life of a roof compared to a traditional design, and provide developers with a more cost effective and sustainable option for their buildings.

Several rooftops in the city already have green roofs installed, including, the Cathedral, West One, Norfolk Community Primary School, The Cube and the University of Sheffield’s Humanities Research Institute

Mark Daly, spokesperson for Care4Air said: “It is great news for South Yorkshire that the region is at the forefront in providing green roof solutions. Research has shown that as well as being better for the environment and helping to improve air quality, green buildings can often earn higher rents and prices, attract tenants and buyers more quickly, and cost less to operate and maintain.”

The Green Roof Forum hopes to establish South Yorkshire as a leader in Green Roof technology in the UK. Forum members include Sheffield City Council, Groundwork Sheffield and the University of Sheffield. Most recently, the Forum secured European investment to establish The Green Roof Centre; a research & demonstration hub providing training and advice to construction professionals.

Wendy Bussey, spokesperson for the Green Roof Forum, said: “We are delighted that our efforts are being recognised with a Care4air Award. With limited space to build across Sheffield, there is no better place to make our city even ‘greener’, than the roofs under which we live and work.”

Care4Air Awards are given out by the Care4Air campaign, a partnership between all four local councils in South Yorkshire and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. The campaign aims to encourage organisations, service providers, and individuals, to take measures to improve local air quality.
